Idiom of the Week

For the top grades in the GCSE controlled writing or speaking assessment your examiner will be looking out for idioms/ common French expressions.

These expressions don't always make sense when translated literally. For example, in English we say, "raining cats and dogs" to mean it's raining heavily, which makes very little sense!

However, they are an easy way to gain extra marks. I'll be teaching you a new idiom each week so you might want to note them down in the back of your books for future reference. Today's idiom is...

'J'ai le cafard' = I'm down in the dumps

Translated literally this means 'I have the cockroach' but the French use it to say 'I'm down in the dumps'.

See if you can use it in your work this week!
Bonne chance!
